In this month’s round up of industry news, issues and updates, we feature articles about trends and challenges communications service providers (CSPs) are seeing in the telco industry today, such as LTE deployment and network performance management.
Telecoms.com – LTE Will Be Launched By 60% of Operators in LatAm by 2013 – September 4th
- According to a survey conducted by Informa Research, 67.5 percent of mobile network operators (MNOs) believe LTE presents a practical business opportunity to meet new revenue streams, expand capacity and address regulatory requirements like licensing. Informa Research Senior Analyst Marceli Passoni states that due to the high rate at which LTE is being deployed worldwide, as compared with previous technologies, it will likely create economies of scale to drive down costs.
FierceWireless – FCC to Measure Mobile Broadband Performance – September 5th
- The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced a new plan to measure the performance of U.S. broadband networks in response to suspected false claims of fast connection speeds. As a result, the FCC hopes to find comparisons and analyses of mobile broadband performance that are valuable to the customer to help them make well-researched network purchasing decisions and spur competition among service providers.
Telecom Asia – Why Superior Network Performance Matters – September 17th
- Mobile broadband users have come to expect a secure and high-quality Internet connection, and even more so with the rapid uptake of smartphones. In the hyper-connected digital age, the network is king, so communication service providers (CSPs) that offer an optimal combination of high-end and mass-market devices, clear service differentiation strategies and truly efficient networks will become true market leaders.
RCR Wireless News – Small Cell Backhaul in the Spotlight – September 19th
- Carriers are working furiously to expand their LTE networks, and as a result, backhaul providers are rushing to deliver the necessary capacity to accommodate growing data traffic. One solution to meet this demand is small cell backhaul, which is currently getting attention from MNOs as a particularly viable backhaul solution. According to ABI Research, this expected popularity with small cell backhaul over fiber will grow from 7 percent of the market to almost 24 percent, with fiber favored by China and North America.
What are your thoughts on these industry updates and issues? Do you think LTE will prove to be cost efficient for CSPs? Besides small cell backhaul, what is another way for operators to gain the capacity they need to meet growing traffic demands? We’re looking forward to your feedback!
