Transport Networks for Mobile Operators – Simplifying and Optimizing Next-Generation Backhaul

For mobile network operators (MNOs), the transition to 4G/LTE makes the move from 2G to 3G look like a walk in the park. Shifting from 2G to 3G was a fairly straightforward process, as the required network optimization was not very extensive. However, 4G/LTE is presenting new challenges for MNOs and complicating the newest network transition. Namely, the all-IP nature of LTE means that intricate architectural changes must be addressed and assured across the entire mobile infrastructure, including the core, transport and access networks.

How can MNOs address these approaching architectural changes? First, they must restructure how they operate and monitor network performance and service quality.

I am happy to be participating in the Next Generation Backhaul session at Transport Networks for Mobile Operators, taking place tomorrow, April 25th. During this session, the other participants and I will discuss the existing state of performance management in LTE transport and backhaul networks, and address key challenges in reducing mean time to recovery and improving quality of experience (QoE). I will also wrap up this discussion with a suggested process for MNOs to implement a unified, end-to-end performance assurance framework, an important tool for tackling these architectural changes.
